They are supported by a European policy environment that is encouraging this shift. But what does this mean for forests?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/The-potential-of-EU-forests-to-supply-the-future-EU-market-for-wood-based-products_6.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11321\" src=\"https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-10-27-um-11.10.09-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-10-27-um-11.10.09-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-10-27-um-11.10.09-716x1024.jpg 716w, https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-10-27-um-11.10.09-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-10-27-um-11.10.09-768x1099.jpg 768w, https:\/\/denkhausbremen.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Bildschirmfoto-2023-10-27-um-11.10.09.jpg 836w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><\/a>Fern and denkhausbremen commissioned a report to give an overview of current and projected levels of EU wood production; uses and impacts on forests, the climate and biodiversity: \u2018Stemming the Tide &#8211; the potential of forests to supply the European bioeconomy\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although forecasting is a difficult exercise as the amount of wood that a forest can supply depends on the rate of climate change and responses to it across the economy, the findings were clear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>multiple policies are increasing demand for wood for a range of sectors, which is increasing production (harvesting) as well as imports of tropical fibres. As a result, <\/em><em>forests are <\/em><em>absorbing and storing less and less carbon dioxide, <\/em><em>making it harder to meet climate commitments<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing the European bioeconomy without reducing consumption would be a disaster. Policies should therefore focus on ways to decrease planned roundwood production (offset partly by increased salvage logging); increase recycling (requiring products to be designed, priced and used accordingly); and emphasise the cascading wood principle, with less wood being used for paper and burned for electricity and heat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study concludes that there is already a lack of woody material available and a lack of forecasts about the likely future demand for biomass.
