Closing the Biomass Gap:
Shared solutions to meet biomass demand within planetary boundaries

The updated EU Bioeconomy Strategy raises urgent questions about the future availability and use of biomass in Europe. As demand for biogenic raw materials continues to grow, the challenge is no longer only how to expand supply — but how to stay within ecological limits while ensuring fair and sustainable resource use. The EU Commission’s Joint Research Centre has concluded that a significant biomass gap is likely to emerge unless decisive action is taken.

We want to counter this with solutions. Concrete, constructive — and possibly challenging. denkhausbremen, FERN and Ekoskog therefore invite colleagues, researchers, civil society actors and policy experts to a conference exploring shared pathways towards a resource-efficient and socially just bioeconomy.

 The conference will:

  • Examine the biomass gap in light of climate change and biodiversity loss.
  • Discuss current and future policy instruments for governing biomass use.
  • Present and debate concrete examples of expanding material use of biomass at the expense of energy use.
  • Highlight pathways to unlock biomass potential through the reduction of industrial livestock production.
  • Showcase how reuse systems can displace the throwaway economy and enable a rapid, large-scale transition to a circular economy.
