Am 21. April 2026 kamen in einem Online-Workshop mehr als 50 Policy-Expert:innen und Campaigner:innen von Umweltorganisationen aus ganz Europa zusammen, um über Chancen und Risiken aus der neuen EU-Bioökonomie-Strategie zu diskutieren. Im Mittelpunkt standen dabei Wälder und holzbasierte Industrien. Zum Auftakt wurde das Konzept der Bioökonomie kritisch beleuchtet. Dr. Joachim Spangenberg (BUND) betonte, dass die Bioökonomie trotz ihres hohen Anteils an Beschäftigung weiterhin zu den weniger innovativen und produktiven Bereichen der EU-Wirtschaft zählt. Gleichzeitig stellte er infrage, ob fossile Rohstoffe und Energiesysteme tatsächlich in großem Umfang durch Biomasse ersetzt werden können, ohne ökologische Belastungsgrenzen zu überschreiten. Sydney Vennin von Fern stellte anschließend die aktuellen Entwicklungen rund um die EU-Bioökonomie-Strategie vor. Viele Teilnehmende äußerten die Sorge, dass die aktualisierte Strategie vor allem bestehende Strukturen fortschreibt: Geplant seien mehr Investitionen und Deregulierung zur Ausweitung der Biomasseproduktion, ohne den Ressourcenverbrauch insgesamt zu senken. Gleichzeitig wurden aber auch Chancen gesehen – etwa beim Abbau von Subventionen für Holzenergie, bei besseren Monitoring-Systemen oder bei der Förderung von Holz aus Dauerwaldwirtschaft. Now it is finally out! Commissioner Jessika Roswall did not miss the chance to personally present the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy last week at a press conference. It has become the expected document – steeped in the spirit of economic growth, so-called innovations of all kinds, and the dismantling of supposedly hindering regulations, but also with a touch of sustainability and planetary boundaries. Or, to quote the Commission: “Nature itself can become part of Europe’s competitiveness.” The publication of the strategy update represents the end of a process of discussions with NGO colleagues and exchange with staff from the Commission and Parliament. Above all, we contributed to the debate in cooperation with 60 fellow civil society organisations and developed frameworks for a responsible bioeconomy. Moments like this are a good opportunity to draw conclusions about whether one’s own commitment to the process ultimately justifies the outcome. More specifically, it can be checked whether any of our jointly formulated demands have been adequately addressed in the final version of the strategy. Concerning our first point – …
